Disguise delivers end-to-end immersive solution for MGM’s Fantasy Box

MGM Fantasy Box

Situated inside the five-star MGM Macau resort, the newly opened Fantasy Box is reimagining what a cultural venue can be. More than just an event space, the 1,400-square-metre venue was designed to reflect MGM’s vision to nurture Macau’s arts scene while bridging Chinese and global cultural experiences.

The centrepiece of the venue is a striking LED canvas that wraps three sides of the room and rises seven metres high. This flexible environment allows the space to shift effortlessly between functions, from art exhibitions and brand activations to corporate events, weddings and concerts, making it suitable to host a wide range of events and audiences.

To bring the Fantasy Box to life, MGM partnered once again with Disguise. Building on eight years of collaboration at the MGM Cotai Theatre and Cotai Spectacle, this project required more than technical infrastructure. From the outset, MGM turned to Disguise Creative Services to help shape the artistic vision, develop content, and deliver a toolkit that would make the venue as adaptable as it is ambitious. Alongside this, the Disguise Technical Services team installed and commissioned the system, with seven GX 3 servers and ten RX III nodes powering the immersive LED environment.

The Challenge

MGM wanted the Fantasy Box to be technology-led, capable of hosting everything from corporate conferences to avant-garde digital art. But while the vision was clear, the creative direction was not yet defined.

What kind of content should fill a 270-degree LED wall? How could a single space equally fulfil its role as the setting for a gala dinner, a wedding venue, or a nightclub? Disguise Creative Services needed to ensure that each environment created would fully and believably immerse audiences, while keeping the content system easy to operate in-house.  As MGM’s Darren Kopas explains, the challenge was not just about building a venue, but about creating a flexible creative foundation. “We needed content and tools that could work across a large volume, meet performance requirements, and still give us the flexibility to adapt to any type of event.”

The Solution

The process began with a visit to the Disguise Los Angeles office alongside system integrators Smart Monkeys. From there, the project unfolded through close collaboration between Disguise’s creative and technical teams, ensuring every decision served both artistic and operational needs.

Disguise Creative Services were brought in from the very start, not just as content creators but as consultants. Through a comprehensive concept phase, the team worked hand-in-hand with MGM to define the look, feel, and functionality of the space.

The outcome was a suite of ten customisable looks designed to evolve over time. Created in both Unreal Engine and Notch, the collection ranged from an audio-reactive nightclub scene and sleek corporate backdrops to a futuristic cityscape and a dramatic curtain reveal. Each environment was built to transport guests into a different atmosphere, giving MGM the flexibility to transform the Fantasy Box into a wedding venue, a conference stage, or a cultural showcase at the touch of a button.

Each scene was designed as a toolset rather than a fixed video. With exposed parameters such as colour, speed, logo, and time of day, MGM’s internal team could adapt and reuse the same look for multiple occasions, keeping content fresh without needing a redesign.

On the technical side, seven Disguise GX 3 servers and ten RX III nodes were installed as the backbone of the system. Disguise’s technical team partnered with entertainment control solutions specialists Smart Monkeys to oversee installation, testing, and commissioning, ensuring compatibility with MGM’s other Disguise-powered venues for operational ease and cybersecurity compliance. Smart Monkeys further integrated intuitive show control, making it simple for MGM’s staff to adjust or trigger looks in real time without re-rendering or reprogramming.

This collaboration between creative consultancy, technical infrastructure, and intuitive control made Fantasy Box both state-of-the-art and highly usable.

The Result

The Fantasy Box is now one of Macau’s most versatile cultural venues. Within weeks of opening, it had already hosted two major events, including Brilliant Stars - The Civilization of Ancient Shu, a large immersive art experience, and cAI™ Lab 2.0 — Is It Your Gaze that Meets Mine, or Mine that Seeks Yours?, part of the 4th Art Macao festival.

But for MGM, the Fantasy Box is more than a venue. It is a living platform for culture and creativity, one that can continuously evolve thanks to the tools and workflows built into its foundation.

The synergy between Disguise’s creative and technical teams gave us tools that empower our team to experiment and iterate in real time. This helped us unlock new possibilities for interactive and generative video elements that can evolve with the experience itself.
